WILLOUGHBY’s final South Northants Cricket League Division One engagement of the season ended on something of a damp note with the match at champions Afro Caribbean abandoned at tea time.
With nothing at stake for the visitors, having won the toss they elected to bat – not the decision usually taken when weather is around.
However with the score at 84 for 4 after 20 overs – thanks to 27 from Dave Alcock, 15 from Ian Andrews, and Hassan Nawaz and Tom Stevenson unbeaten on 11 and 9 respectively, the elements intervened forcing a decision to abandon play and bring the league campaign to a watery close.
The ten points yielded means Willoughby finish a respectable third place in Division 1 for 2016, with a platform to push on further next term.
It was a similar watery end to the league season at The Green for Willoughby A as heavy rain put paid to any chance of a result against visitors Gawcott & Hillesden.
Only eight overs were possible before the weather took hold, in which time the hosts batting first recovered from the early loss of Sean Thornton to reach 49 for 1; Manny Sidhu and Kamesh Ganti unbeaten on 25 and 21 respectively before play was abandoned.
The result means Willoughby’s second XI end their first season back in Division 3 following promotion last term in a very credible fourth place, finishing only two points behind third spot.
