WARWICKSHIRE Bears coach Tom Masterson was all smiles after watching his side get back to winning ways by beating Coventry-based CWBA 62-45 to move up to second in the National League Second Division South.

The Bears were looking to keep their run going in the league after losing in their friendly fixture last Sunday and from the tip they knew they were in for a hard fought game at Woodlands.

They came up against a well organised defence and the hosts played a high pressing game in a bid to target Bears’ main threat Ben Haigh.

But the away team were able to break down their stronghold and go into the second quarter with an 11-point lead.

CWBA re-grouped for the second quarter and returned more determined. The Bears were in trouble early in the quarter with their forward Haigh getting into foul trouble and he had to be pulled onto the bench.

This contributed to limited opportunities for the Bears but their opponents could not get close to the Bears’ lead which they had built up from the first quarter.

he third quarter was a dead heat with both teams trading basket for basket and the Bears stayed in front without being able to pull away.

They were however able to cut loose in the final quarter and were able to comfortably see the game out.

“Firstly I would like to congratulate Coventry on a great game,” said Masterson. “They should be really proud of the performance they put out today, especially Cameron Swan who was a constant thorn in our side all game.

“It was a good win, but we didn’t do ourselves any favours, picking up far too many silly fouls.

“On the plus side I was so happy with the contribution of Ian Beach and Dan Gill who took charge of the game. This win gets us back on trackĀ  to trying to clinch promotion and a place in the National play-offs again.”
