Warwickshire Bears crowned champions after emphatic win

A WONDERFUL season for the Warwickshire Bears was capped off in style as they beat the Blackhawks 61-16 to be crowned winners of the Second Division South.

A comprehensive victory saw Paul Colbourne top score with 18 points as the visitors ran riot and now they head into next month’s play-offs high in confidence.

With the title virtually won ahead of Sunday’s game, Bears coach Tom Masterson opted to select some of his fringe players and rest those who are likely to return for the National Championship play-offs at the beginning of June.

The Bears were in control of the game from the tip off and even with Invictus player Nerys Pearce playing for Blackhawks, they were unable to make any in roads into the Bears’ impressive defense.

The visitors took control of the offensive basket and ran up an imposing score with Aimee Hillson, Rick Powell, Liz Grinnell and Andy Stow all putting in impressive displays after making the step up from the second team.

“What a good win and that has given me lots to think about,” said Bears coach Masterson.

“Sunday gave an ideal chance for those players looking for a place in the squad that we will take to Worcester and many have made a great case for that.”

Bears are next in action when they travel to Worcester for the British Wheelchair Basketball National Play offs on the weekend of June 4/5.
