Valley maintain play-off push with Belper victory

RUGBY Town continued their push for the Northern Premier League Division One South play-offs thanks to a 2-0 win at Belper Town, reports Craig Webb.

Valley’s impressive form on Saturday with a comfortable victory at the John Marston stadium whic means Dale Belford’s side have now lost just one game in 11 league games.

Belford kept the same side that disappointingly drew against Tividale last time ou and Rugby’s intent was clear from the start, with Kurtis Revan hitting the post in the fourth minute after a defensive error.

Then just a minute later home keeper Danny Haystead had to produce a fingertip save from the striker after he had a shot from Kevin Thornton’s precise pass.

Belper’s first effort on goal came in the eighth minute when Jon Williams saw his goal-bound effort from a Rob Stevenson cross cleared off the line by Chris Tullin.

Rugby continued to press though with Thornton seeing a free-kick go wide after a low shot deceived the wall and Haystead.

Rugby took the lead in the 33rd minute through the prolific David Kolodynski. Thornton found space and threaded a lovely through ball to Kolodynski to score emphatically from 15 yards out.

Town doubled their lead in the 37th minute when again Kolodynski bamboozled the home defence with his pace and with an accurate volley helped by another defensive error he scored a brilliant goal leaving Haystead helpless in the Belper goal.

The leading goalscorer nearly got his hat trick just before half time but this time Haystead saved his effort.

The second half was in comparsion to the first half a non-event with Belper not having an effort on goal and Rugby seemingly happy to be content with their two-goal lead.

Callum Powell had Rugby’s only shot on target in the second period but saw his strike go over the bar, and Alex Steadman hit the side netting late on for Belper but Rugby fully deserved the victory against their lacklustre opponents.
