RUGBY & East Warwickshire’s veterans side are celebrating after progressing through to the semi-final of the National Over 40s Cup.

A 2-0 victory against the City of Peterborough booked Rugby’s position in the final four where they will now face East Grinstead at home.

Chris Graham scored Rugby’s first goal from open play and Colin Odwell bagged their second with a left post deflection just before half-time. Rugby wasted a number of chances in front of goal to extend their lead but fortunately they had Danny Bell to thank in goal after he made a number of saves and a miraculous tackle on the goal line by Giles Morrison ensured a clean sheet for the Rugby veterans.

The men’s first team were also smiling at the weekend after claiming a valuable three points in their quest for survival in the Midland Premier Division.

For the second second consecutive week, Rugby found themselves involved in another 11-goal thriller after beating Stone 6-5

Rugby made things difficult for themselves after throwing away a 2-0 lead to find themselves 3-2 down at half-time.

But they returned for the second half composed and turned the game around with Szymon Oszyjczyk sealing his hat-trick and Sam Baker (2) and Chris Graham also got their names on the scoresheet.

Goals from Sam Williams and Colin Odwell earned Rugby’s second team a 2-2 draw against Cannock but the third team had no luck agains the same side after losing 4-2.

After falling behind early on, Rugby took the lead through Gaz Unett and Giles Morrison but Cannock proved too strong and came from behind to take all three points.

There was better news for the fourth team however as Stuart Morgan bagged a brace in a comfortable 4-0 win over Sutton Coldfield.

Morgan opened the scoring from a short corner routine and a second goal followed when Matt Rush slotted home from close range.

Rugby continued to create chances after the break and Morgan scored his second of the match before Mackey converted David Manning’s cross to wrap up the win.

League leaders Boots proved too good for Rugby’s fifth team after they lost out 2-0 in a game of few opportunities and the sixth team went down 2-1 away at Warwick.

In ladies section, the first team beat Solihull Blossomfield 3-0 and the second team also tasted success by defeating Warwick University 2-0.

And the third team completed a hat-trick of wins for the women after recording a 2-0 victory over Nuneaton.

Jacqui Cressey scored the first goal of the game and after a slow start to the second half Anngharad added a second.
