HOCKEY: ANOTHER fantastic performance saw Rugby & North Warwickshire come out of their top-of-the-table clash against Warwick in the Midland League Division One.
Szymon Oszyjczyk scored a brace to earn Rugby a deserved 3-1 victory to keep them level on points with fellow leaders Sutton Coldfield who are top on goal difference.
From the moment the whistle went rugby were working harder than ever and their early pressure was rewarded when Rich Hill turned over possession and a first short corner of the match ended with Oszyjczyk opening the scoring.
Rugby did not stop there as they won possession back every time Warwick tried to attack and soon after Chris Graham went around the keeper and finished off into an open goal.
After heading into the second half with a 2-0 lead Rugby knew Warwick would press higher in search of a way back into the match but it was the visitors who continued to control the match.
Rugby were rewarded with a third goal when Oszyjczyk scored with a spectacular flock from a tight angle.
Warwick kept trying and scored what proved to be little more than a consolation with five minutes remaining as Rugby closed the game out to pick up all three points.
There was not such good news Rugby’s second team after they fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat against a well-drilled Birmingham University side.
The third team picked up a hard earned point after drawing 1-1 with Notts Uni, with Nick Foster scoring Rugby’s only goal of the game after some good work down the right by Tom Barker.
Rugby’s fourth team were hammered 7-0 by Loughborough Students, while the fifth team got the better of Beeston 3-2 and the sixth team lost to Northampton Saints 2-1.
There was cause for celebration for the seventh team who beat Northampton Saints 6-0 with Guy Smith bagging a brace.
In the ladies section, a 6-0 victory for Rugby’s first team against Uttoxeter saw them move to the top of the league.
The ladies’ second team played a late 4pm start away against Warwick and came away with a 5-0 win with ‘Lou Lou’ scoring a hat-trick.
There was also joy for the third team who beat Hampton 4-1.
