WARWICKSHIRE women earned revenge over Somerset for their two-shot defeat in the Johns Trophy as they enjoyed a 95-58 victory in searing heat in a friendly.
The strength-sapping conditions resulted in a shortened game of just 14 ends and the highest winning Warwickshire rink was Sue Hornsby with Margaret Stephens and Di Thurlbeck (all Lillington) and Barbara Harsant (Solihull Municipal) who started quietly before four shots on the third and again on the fifth ends set them on their way to a final score of 22-8.
Jenny Corn (Lillington) with Di Medhurst (Stoke), Dawn Horne (Leamington) and Margaret Waterhouse (Snitterfield) scored a steady one shot on the first six ends and were leading 11-0 before their opponents hit the target and Warwickshire eventually won 15-5.
Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Joy Cooke (Blossomfield), Liz Chedgzoy (Stratford) and Ann Harwood (Wolvey) were fairly evenly matched to start but pulled away towards the end and won 18-7.
Jean Petty (Norgren) with Jacqui Cook (Lillington), Antoinette Lambert and Chris Harrison (both Ambleside) were evenly matched with their opponents at 3-3 on five ends but a four on the sixth end pushed them ahead and they did not look back in winning 14-10.
Pat Gagg with Pat Harvey (both Lillington), June Austin (Three Spires) and Rosemarie Geden (Southam) were 8-1 down at five ends, but their determination paid off and they eventually managed a 12-12 draw.
Elaine Taylor with Chris Roberts (both Stoke), Margaret Boldy (Avon) and Chris Ward (Lillington) were 14-3 down at nine ends, but a sudden spurt and six shots on the 11th end helped their cause and they were only adrift at 16-14 by the end.
Reserves Carol Norton and Jayne Henfrey were both asked to take over midway through the game when the temperature was just too much for two of the players.
Lillington Bowling Club, as always, put on an excellent meal and everyone enjoyed the afternoon despite the excessive heat.
