OLD Laurentians suffered another heavy defeat this time at home to a highly motivated Huntingdon & District side in the Midlands 1 East league, writes Mick Warwick.
New signings James Harris and Ollie Jones made their debuts on the bench and Leigh Fisher came into the front row for his first game of the season but Ols fell to a 60-7 defeat.
OLs had first use of a wind blowing down the pitch but soon found themselves defending in their own half as Huntingdon made their tactics very clear – to get into the opposition half and then play rugby.
This approach soon yielded points when they kicked two penalties within the first ten minutes.
The home side were defending well but a lack of lineout ball during this period meant that they were unable to gain field position and reduce the pressure.
Surprisingly it was against this run of play that OLs took the lead when they scored a well taken try.
Marc Eagles made a superb break from well inside his own half and was stopped in the opposition 22 but from the breakdown the ball was quickly fed to the blindside for fullback Kev Vince to score an excellent try and Ben Roach kicked the conversion for 7-6.
But sadly that was as good as it got for Ols who were dealt a blow when Ben Scott was forced to withdraw through an ankle injury.
Huntingdon eventually got their kicking game going to force their way back into OL’s half to set up the platform they needed to put the home side back under pressure and this inevitably led to their first try which was converted for 13-7.
In the second quarter they went over the try line for three more times and went into the half time break leading 25-7.
Injuries to prop Aaron Metcalfe and fly half Ben Roach meant wholesale changes for Ols but despite this the third quarter went well for Ols who conceded just one try when Huntingdon cleverly exposed some confusion down the 10 channel.
Huntingdon scored two more tries in the last quarter and another two in injury-time to give the final scoreline a lopsided look.
