Late goal breaks Rugby Town hearts at promotion rivals Shaw Lane Aquaforce

RUGBY Town went down to an agonising defeat in Yorkshire after Shaw Lane Aquaforce scored a dramatic late winner deep in injury-time to steal a 3-2 victory in the Northern Premier League Division One South, reports Craig Webb.

Substitute Marcus Edwards scored in the 95th minute to seal all three points for Shaw Lane who moved into second place in the table as a result and left Rugby devastated after they deserved at a least a point.

Manager Dale Belford kept with the side that beat Gresley in midweek hoping to build on their unbeaten run with the game being played at Frickley Athletic’s ground.

Shaw Lane got their noses in front in the 14th minute when Rhys Meynell scored from close range after an initial cross from Adam Priestley was flicked on the the midfielder from Lee Bennett’s flick on.

However, Rugby got straight back in it when in the 17th minute, in form Kevin Thornton scored his fifth goal in four games when his pace bamboozled the defence and drove his shot powerfully into the net from a David Kolodynski cutback.

The ‘home’ side continued to press with both Bennett and Gavin Allott going close with decent efforts. Rugby had a penalty claim turned out on the stroke of half time when Kolodynski was brought down in the area, but the referee waved play on much to the disgust of the striker.

Rugby went into the lead in the 66th minute, not before Shaw Lane were denied with cracking saves from Sam Andrew in the Rugby goal. Kolodynski scored his first goal in seven games, when a pinpoint Tom James freekick was backheaded into the goal past Tom Morgan.

However, Shaw Lane were not about to give up and equalised in the 77th minute when Lee Bennett pounced for a low shot after good work at the byeline from Jonathan Wafula.

Then in the dying embers of the game with Rugby looking good for a draw Marcus Edwards received the ball midway through the half, went on a unchallenged run and struck a decent shot which bounced over Andrew.
