Borough's girls festival of football hailed a hit

Rugby Editorial 31st Aug, 2019   0

AN INAUGURAL ‘Girls Festival of Football’ held by Rugby Borough’s Women and Girls section went down a success last weekend at Kilsby Lane.

Over 300 girls participated in the tournament, hailing from clubs all over the Midlands, in the latest demonstration of the promising growth of the women’s game.

Such was the success of the event, that the club are hoping to make the tournament an annual feature, with funds being raised for investment in Borough’s coaching, equipment and refereeing for the girls’ sides.

The U10 and U11 category tournament were played on Saturday afternoon, while the under-12s and under-13s final featured local side Coventry Copsewood – who fell to eventual winners AFC Leicester on Sunday morning.

In the afternoon, Leicester City women’s youth team ran out triumphant in the U14 and U15s final, beating Borough’s under-14s side, to round off a successful weekend.

Borough are open for new female members to join their youth ranks, with interested players invited to try out for the club at training, held every Friday night between 6pm and 7pm.

Meanwhile, the men’s senior team are in FA Vase action tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm), when they begin their journey in this year’s competition at home to British Airways FC in the first qualifying round.

Borough will hope to get off to a flyer and at least match their performance in last season’s edition, when Rugby reached the second qualifying round.
