Wasps secure second Vitality Superleague win, but Mansfield demands more from Black and Golds

HEAD Coach Mel Mansfield says her Wasps side still need to put in the hard yards to improve performance levels – despite notching a second win of the Vitality Superleague season.

The Black and Golds were 47-33 victors over Surrey Storm on Sunday, rounding off an opening month of the campaign and responding to two successive defeats in positive fashion.

It was a win that had to be earned too, with Wasps outscoring their opponents in all four quarters, although Mansfield felt more fluidity was needed in her side’s play.

“We got four quarter wins, but I wasn’t necessarily happy with each of the quarters,” she said.

“We got a result and we got everyone on in the end, it wasn’t a great game and it felt very messy – there were a lot of arms and holds in there – so it was difficult to play good netball.

“There were some good moments in the attacking circle where we played some nice triangles, there were equally some messy moments where we weren’t giving the attackers an option.

“Defensively, the first quarter was a challenge, but once we were able to hold them up and keep them high in the attacking third I was pleased with our defensive work.

“All in all, we go into a break with a smile on our faces, this team work incredibly hard and they won’t have been satisfied with that performance, so we’ll go for it for the next two weeks.”

After returning from a two-week hiatus, Wasps do battle with Manchester Thunder on Saturday, March 13, before facing Leeds Rhinos a day later.
