Town juniors start title defence with narrow Worcester City win

Rugby Editorial 24th Aug, 2017   0

FOOTBALL: DEFENDING champions Rugby Town Juniors started their league campaign with a deserved 2-1 victory over Worcester City.

Town started off brightly and were soon testing the Worcester keeper.

A rasping drive from Sam McLintocjk followed by a decent strike from Jac Redhead both pulled out great saves from the Worcester keeper.

Town went ahead on 20 minutes when the Impressive McLintock drove a free kick past the keeper and into the corner of the net.

Five minutes later, Town doubled their lead when smart play down the left from Ty Florence set up Jake Warmington – who crossed for Luke Jones for score.

The second half was much the same story with good possession from Town and chances again going begging.

However Worcester made it interesting when a cross shot nestled into the top corner of the goal to put them back in it.

Worcester did up their game with some fine defending from Matt Clarke and Will Harris.

The visiting side had a couple of good chances to level the game, and should’ve done so when their No.9 put a clear cut chance on goal wide.

Rugby weathered the storm though and ran out eventual 2-1 winners in a closely fought contest.

Town juniors are next in action on the road against Redditch Utd.

The match takes place at Valley Stadium on Tuesday, August 29.

Kick off is at 7.45pm.
