Town get back to winning ways away to Holbeach

Rugby Editorial 17th Apr, 2019   0

TWO late goals from Charlie Evans gave Rugby Town victory over Holbeach United last weekend, ahead of their final home fixture of the season against Desborough Town at Butlin Road on Saturday (3pm).

Their recent win keeps them four points off second-placed Deeping Rangers, with three games left to play.

Valley were forced to dig in on Saturday, in a game that they edged by capitalising on two late defensive errors from Holbeach.

Making four changes to the line-up, manager Carl Adams re-introduced Matt Hill, Liam Francis, Eli Bako and Lewis Rankin, as the game got off to a slow start.

With both sides failing to find any rhythm to their play, the hosts had the best chance fall to them in the second-half, when Keenah Rosser had to clear a Jonny Lockie shot off the line.

The opening goal arrived 77 minutes in, when Evans received a long punt upfield from the goalkeeper and went clean through to fire the ball home.

Another direct ball was misjudged in the dying moments by the home defence, allowing Evans to round the keeper and finish off the game.

Valley now target a first win in four at Butlin Road on Saturday, ahead of visiting leaders Daventry on Easter Monday (3pm) and finishing their season away to Harborough United the following Saturday.

Rugby drew the reverse game 1-1 away in October, and face a Desborough side who are very much in-form, having won their last three games – beating Northampton ON Chenecks 1-0 in their most recent fixture.

The club are set to host their annual presentation evening (6:30pm start) after the Desborough game in the hospitality suite, where all supporters are invited to attend the event.
