GOALS from Andy Walker and Adam Hewitt helped Rugby & East Warwickshire continue their Midlands Division One title push.

The 2-0 defeat of Stratford keeps them within reach of University of Nottingham 2nds who sit seven in front of REWHC on 29 points in the Midland Men’s Hockey League.

While the men’s second team had contrasting fortunes in the first half of the season in Division Two, they have made the best possible start following the winter break after beating Leek 2nds 4-2.

In a battle of the two winless clubs at the bottom of the league, Rugby found their way past their relegation rivals thanks to strikes from Jan deClerk, Chris Graham, Liam Brown and Gaz Unett.

A thrashing was handed out to the men’s third string by University of Nottingham 3rds in the East Midlands Premier Division.

Will Cooper-Harris, Jimmy Royle and Alex Salter failed to save face for their side despite finding the net in the 15-3 loss.

The title aspirations of the men’s 5ths in South East Division Two are still alive after beating Nuneaton 2nds 4-0.

Early goals from Keith Slaughter, Tom Scott-Brown and Tom Watkins put their side in control, while Henry Berridge capped the result with a late finish.

Rugby remain a point behind Northampton Saints 5ths who beat Ashby 3rds 2-1 at the weekend.

Sitting in third are Rugby’s sixth string, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Market Harborough 2nds despite Nick Dowling’s goal.

The only REWHC ladies side in action last weekend were the second team, who were also forced to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw with Nuneaton.

It was an improvement for Rugby, given the 6-2 loss they had suffered in the previous fixture in Division One of the Warwickshire Womens Hockey League.

Jess Naylor was the scorer for REWHC.
