Tigers have plenty of roar, but not enough to lift silverware after final heartaches

A LAST-MINUTE winner and a penalty shootout defeat left Rugby Town Tigers empty handed, after reaching two tournament finals at the weekend.

The Tigers won five games, drew one and scored 13 in Saturday’s tournament at St Finbarr’s in Coventry, a record which pitted them up against the hosts in Saturday’s final.

Gabriel and Reid both found the net four times each, while Finley netted a brace and Arjan, Olly and William all found the net in the opening games.

Despite dominating proceedings in the final, St Finbarr’s managed to counter attack the Tigers and score in the final minutes to win the game, leaving Rugby heartbroken despite their excellent showing.

The team then travelled to Oxford for a tournament at Middleton Cheney Football Club the next day hoping to avenge the defeat and return with silverware.

The Tigers battled their way to three wins and two draws in their opening round of games, keeping clean sheets in every match.

Two goals from Arjan and strikes from Finley, Gabriel and Hayden were enough to send Rugby to a second final of the weekend, where they were again unable to put the game to bed.

With the game going to penalties, the Tigers looked in a perilous position when missing two of their three penalties, but were saved by the reflexes of their keeper Orson to send the shootout to sudden death.

Ultimately, the Tigers lost out and were forced to accept runners up medals for a second time on the weekend.
