New Borough duo primed for success after nine-goal show

THE NEW management team of Tommy Young and Tom Wardle enjoyed the perfect start to life at Rugby Borough after an astonishing 9-2 drubbing of GNG Leicester on Tuesday night.

Borough had been searching for replacements for the previous managerial duo of Jamie Tank and Alex Baird, who stepped down in the aftermath of the disappointing 4-1 defeat by Friar Lane & Epworth at the start of the month.

In Young – who enjoyed five league titles at local side AEI Rugby – and Wardle – a man who knows Borough well having turned out for the Kilsby Lane outfit during his playing days – the club look to be in capable hands judging by their opening game in charge.

Rugby were a class above their hosts GNG in the mid-week trip to The Riverside, running riot in the second half after Alex Webb and Joe Taplin had put them 2-1 up at half-time.

Hat-tricks from Shaun Barber and Reece Lydon, plus late efforts from substitutes Mark Tanner and Lee Vince, then put Borough on cloud nine – inspiring hopes of a push for a top-three finish come the season end.

Rising to sixth in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division as a result of the drubbing, Rugby’s next task is a home meeting with 11th-placed Ellistown on Saturday (3pm).
