HOCKEY - Rugby and East Warwickshire under-10's become Midlands champions

RUGBY and East Warwickshire Hockey Club’s under-10’s have become Midlands champions at the highest level of competition for their age group.

The boys were crowned Warwickshire champions a fortnight ago to qualify for the Midlands finals – beating Atherstone, Hampton and Sikh Community in the group stages before then seeing off Edgbaston  and Solihull in the semi-final and final respectively.

And that success saw the boys qualify for the Regional finals as County champions as they were grouped with National League outfit Belper (Derbyshire), Coalville (Leicestershire) and Newark (Nottinghamshire).

The club began the group stages with a credible 0-0 draw against Belper before edging out Newark 1-0 thanks to a team goal finished by Miles.

And the boys finished the group with a comfortable 3-0 win against Coalville with David scoring twice and Oliver adding a third to qualify for the quarter-finals as runners-up on goal difference.

Rugby took an early lead in their last eight clash with Ashby and held on to secure another 1-0 victory and advance to the semi-finals.

And the boys remained solid in defence to take their last four clash with Repton to penalty flicks as Miles coolly scored before goalkeeper Lewis made two stunning saves from as many penalties to send Rugby into the final.

It was an all Warwickshire final as Rugby faced Solihull in the showpiece and the boys saved their best performance until last.

Oliver’s goal and a brace from birthday boy David helped Rugby on their way to a convincing 3-0 victory as they were crowned Midlands champions – the highest possible prize in the country for the under-10 age group.

Rugby were unbeaten in the group and knockout stages without conceding a single goal as defensive trio Charlie, Sam and Isaac and goalkeeper Lewis proved impenetrable at the back.

And David, Max and Matthew were menacing in attack as they proved too much to handle for the rest of the competing teams.

Providing support to both the defenders and attackers were Alex, Miles, Oliver and Sam B who dominated the middle of the park.

It marks an amazing achievement for the team who have only been playing together for a year.

The boys would like to say a massive thank you to the coaching staff, under-18 representatives Charlie, Freddie and Matthew who give up their Friday nights and weekends for training and matches and do an outstanding job with the lads.

Also to Giles and Rob in the management team and to the ever present supporters, who also won the loudest supporters competition.

The girls under-10’s team also made it through the County Championships as champions and secured sixth place which marked another impressive result for the club.
