MARK Cossar faces a stern test this weekend as he goes in search of a record-breaking eighth British Masters Championship grasstrack title.

Cossar, from Rugby, is already the most successful rider in the sport’s premier home event which takes place at Merley Hall Farm in Corfe Mullen, Dorset.

The British Masters Championship dates back to 1951 and 38-year-old seven-time champion Cossar will battle against a host of rivals in search of an eighth crown this weekend.

Cossar said: “I’d say its wide open this year.

“So much will depend on the weather on the day, but the track is smaller than most, so it won’t all be about power.

“Bike set up will be crucial. I’ll be doing everything I can to win that eighth title. My passenger Carl Blyth has been superb all season, so we’re in with a chance.”

Mark’s younger brother Tom, who finished third in 2021, tasted success as a masters champion in 2009 when he was passenger to Mark in his inaugural title win.

Tom has proven to be one of the most improved riders on the grasstrack circuit over the last two years and has every chance of coming away with the title.

Alongside the Cossar’s, two-time masters champion Gareth Winterburn and pre-meeting favourite Terry Saunters are also in contention.
