FOOTBALL - Rugby Town ease past Oadby after Shaw scores twice on first start

ADAM Shaw scored twice on his full debut as Rugby Town recorded a sixth successive win in all competitions with a 4-1 victory away at GNG Oadby Town.

Shaw opened the scoring on 18 minutes before doubling his tally on 65 minutes with a deflected effort to seal the points for Rugby.

Max Johnson’s stunning free-kick on 33 minutes and Edwin Ahenkorah’s effort on the stroke of half-time had the visitors three goals ahead at the break.

The home side scored a late consolation through Zico Thandi with nine minutes left to play as Rugby romped to another fine win in Leicestershire.

Victory for Valley means they are now fifth in the United Counties League Premier Division South table.

And Shaw’s first Rugby goal came against the run of play after he ran onto Johnson’s pass before cutting in from the left and slotting into the right corner.

Johnson then scored an exquisite free-kick thumping the ball in off the crossbar from distance to double Rugby’s lead.

And Valley wrapped up the points before half-time when Ahenkorah intercepted a poor back-pass before finishing past Oadby keeper Charlie Andrews.

Shaw grabbed his second of the game when his deflected shot wrong-footed Andrews to leave the Oadby stopper with no chance before Thandi scoring a consolation for the home side.

Rugby are next in action against Stourport Swifts on Saturday, December 11 in the third round of the FA Vase with kick-off at 3pm at Walshes Meadow.
