RUGBY Town battled to a 2-1 derby win against rivals Racing Club Warwick to claim just their second league victory of the season.

Goals either side of half time from Rivel Mardenborough and Cairo Taylor put Valley in command before Aaron Opoku scored a late penalty for the home side at Townsend Meadow.

The result leaves Rugby 16th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, one point above the relegation zone.

Rugby broke the deadlock on 31 minutes when Mardenborough ran onto a loose ball in the box and poked a shot through the legs of Sam Lomax from close range.

And Valley doubled their lead just past the hour mark on 62 minutes as Taylor looped a superb effort over Lomax from 15-yards out.

Warwick won a penalty in the final minute as Opoku sent Marcus Bald the wrong way from the spot.

However, Valley held on to secure a second victory over their rivals this season after also beating the Racers in the FA Trophy earlier this month.

Rugby travel to Lichfield City on Saturday, September 27 with kick-off at 3pm at the Trade Tyre Community Stadium.
