RUGBY TOWN eased into the last 16 of the FA Vase after a resounding 5-1 win against Lakenheath thanks to two goals from Danico Johnson.

Johnson opened the scoring before later extending Valley’s lead with Justin Marsden, Loyiso Recci and Caine Elliott also on target.

Lakenheath scored a late consolation through Shaun Avis from the penalty spot in the final minute but it was not sufficient enough to dampen the mood at Butlin Road.

The result means Rugby will play competition favourites North Shields in the fifth round in North Tyneside on Saturday, February 12.

In front of over 400 fans, Rugby spurned some early chances with David Kolodynski going close and Johnson shooting the wrong side of the post.

However, the home side eventually found the net on 30 minutes when Johnson guided the ball underneath the goalkeeper after exchanging passes with Kolodynski.

And Marden extended Rugby’s Lead on 41 minutes when he struck from close range after Kolodynski’s shot was parried into his path.

The Eastern Counties League outfit then had Sam Hawley sent to the sin bin for dissent as the teams left the pitch at half time.

Rugby picked up where they left off after the break and trebled their lead on 64 minutes when Johnson curled an effort into the bottom corner for his second of the match.

And Lakenheath saw skipper Hawley sent to the sin bin for a second time for dissent following Valley’s third goal.

Town keeper Ash Bodycote made his first important save of the match to keep out a well-struck volley from substitute Alex McIntosh.

Rugby scored twice more to take a five-goal lead as Recci’s low drive from 20-yards out made it four on 75 minutes.

And Elliott’s clipped cross from the right also found its way into the net on 81 minutes with substitute Max Johnson setting up both goals.

Avis smashed home a penalty in the final minute after Jamal Clarke pushed over Tom Thurlborn inside the box.

Rugby are next in action away at Cogenhoe United on Saturday, January 22 with kick-off at 3pm at Compton Park.
