FOOTBALL - Rugby Borough return to winning ways against Magna

DALE LINTON scored twice as Rugby Borough claimed a 2-0 win away at Magna 73 to end a run of consecutive defeats.

Linton struck two goals in the first half to seal another crucial victory for Borough and maintain their push for the league title.

The result means Borough sit second in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division table, one point behind leaders Allexton and New Parks with three games in hand.

Borough were still without several first-team players through injury but should have opened the scoring when Halim Halim blasted over after playing a one-two with Linton.

And Rugby grabbed a deserved opener on 32 minutes when Linton rose highest to head home Luke Townsend’s looped cross.

Linton soon had his second when he latched onto Townsend’s long ball upfield before beating two players in the box and firing past the Magna goalkeeper.

Borough should have extended their lead at the start of the second half only for Lewis Commins to hit the post after he beat the offside trap and rounded the keeper.

There was also a debut from the bench for academy prospect Connal O’Dwyer who looked comfortable at right-back whilst Bobbie Biddle made a smart save late on to secure a clean sheet.

Rugby are next in action at Ashby Ivanhoe Knights on Wednesday, March 30 with kick-off at 7.30pm at Nfu Sports Ground.
