RUGBY BOROUGH advanced to the Birmingham County Vase semi-finals after securing a 4-1 win at home to Gornal Athletic.

Dale Linton struck twice for Rugby in the first-half before Tommy Glasscoe’s penalty and Ash Piper’s strike sealed the win at Kilsby Lane.

Borough broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Linton finished well from Lee Thomas’s deflected cross.

Glasscoe curled a free-kick narrowly wide before Linton shot straight at the Gornal goalkeeper from Ryan Palmer’s pass.

However, Gornal equalised on 26 minutes with a good finish from the edge of the penalty area.

And Borough keeper Bobby Biddle then made a pair of impressive saves to keep the scores level after Ash Pier blazed over at the other end.

Rugby reclaimed the lead just after the half hour mark when Linton score his second of the game.

And Borough went into the break with a two-goal lead when Glasscoe converted from the penalty spot after Linton was fouled in the box.

Gornal almost pulled a goal back in the opening minute of the second half with a curling effort that clipped the crossbar.

The home side wrapped up the win when Piper scored Rugby’s fourth goal from Palmer’s square ball following a good move down the right.

And Rugby almost added a fifth goal when Thomas struck the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Borough are next in action at home to Allexton and New Parks FC on Saturday, January 22 with kick-off at 2pm at Kilsby Lane.
