CRICKET - Willoughby ease to friendly victories

WILLOUGHBY CC eased to two friendly victories against Alvechurch and Hopwood and Monks Kirby this past weekend.

The club’s Saturday XI secured a comprehensive 201-run win against Alvechurch and Hopwood 4th’s after posting 318-6 before bowling out their opponents for a measly 117.

A late fixture change meant Alvechurch and Hopwood visited The Green for a friendly as Ambrose Deery (52) and Ashley Rayner (50 not out) impressed with the bat.

And James Lavender (43) was the only Alvechurch and Hopwood batter to reach double figures as Fergus Deery (3-18), Mark Fell (3-20), Martin Nichols (2-18) and Alex Hislop (2-29) took the wickets.

Elsewhere, Willoughby won by 90 runs against Monks Kirby as the host were bowled out for 201 before restricting their opponents to 111 all out.

Rayner won the toss and elected to bat as Dave Alcock retired upon reaching 50 before new member Vikas Sangwan helped the home side post a very respectable 201 all out.

Tight bowling from Ryan Lines and Sangwan saw the visitors pinned back until the claimed three of the opening four Monks Kirby batters.

Reece Moor replaced Sangwan and showed his development over the winter with a quality spell of in-swing bowling to take 4-20 in his eight overs.

Willoughby host Irthlingborough Town 2nd’s on Saturday, April 30 with the game set to begin at 12pm (midday) at The Green.

And Willoughby’s 2nd XI travel to Geddington’s 4th XI on the same day with the game set to begin at 12pm (midday) at Kettering Buccleuch Academy.

There is also a club friendly on Sunday, May 1 as Willoughby travel to Massey Ferguson for a 1.30pm start.
