BEAU Webster starred on debut as Warwickshire secured a five-wicket victory against Yorkshire in the County Championship.

The Australian all-rounder hit 85 runs from just 86 balls in Warwickshire’s first innings at Headingley.

And despite failing to take a wicket in either of Yorkshire’s innings, Webster then finished on six not out in the away side’s second innings as the Bears secured their second win of the season.

The result means Warwickshire sit second in the County Championship Division One table, four points behind early leaders Nottinghamshire.

Warwickshire won the toss and opted to bowl and took a flurry of wickets to restrict the home side to 105-6.

However, Jonny Bairstow (47) and Jordan Thompson (35) formed a solid seventh-wicket partnership.

And a useful knock from Ben Sears (28) saw Yorkshire reach 205 all out.

Ethan Bamber (5-47) starred with the ball while Ed Barnard (3-53) also impressed.

In reply, Warwickshire stuttered to 106-5 before Webster came to the crease.

The Australia test international hit 14 boundaries on his way to 85 with Warwickshire all out for 253.

Sears (4-45) and George Hill (3-35) did the damage with the ball as the Bears took a 48-run lead into Yorkshire’s second innings.

Despite the best efforts of Joe Root (90) and Adam Lyth (40) Warwickshire bowled Yorkshire out for 232.

Bamber (4-60) and Barnard (3-52) proved the pick of the Bears bowlers once again.

And Warwickshire comfortably reached the required target with five wickets to spare.

Opener Rob Yates (41) and Zen Malik (49 not out) helped the Bears to victory while Barnard (37) chipped in with a useful knock.

Warwickshire are next in action against Surrey with the game to begin on Friday, May 9 at 11am at Edgbaston.
