Borough Women beaten by leaders

Rugby Editorial 4th Nov, 2020   0

A TRIP to Birmingham County League Premier Division leaders Darlaston Town failed to result in a positive outcome for Rugby Borough Women last weekend.

Borough went down 3-0 at the Bentley Leisure Pavillion to a Darlaston side who maintained their 100 per cent record this term.

Third-placed Rugby were under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task at hand, but were equally buoyed by the prospect of being the first side to deal a blow to the runaway leaders.

Taking a defensive approach to proceedings, the visitors battled with real endeavour out of possession and played some good football when given the opportunity.

But the difference in quality meant Town hit the front just before the break through a Lauri Alexander penalty that narrowly caught out keeper Beth Daly.

That advantage was extended on the hour mark when Joanna Smith’s deflected effort caught out Borough’s shot-stopper – a cruel blow after concerted efforts to get back on level terms.

Sarah Lojko’s lobbed finish nine minutes from time killed off the game, leaving Borough pointless ahead of the enforced one-month break during the lockdown period.
