FOOTBALL: BOROUGH returned to winning form on Saturday with a convincing 9-0 victory against Birstall United Reserves.

Prior to Saturday’s game, a one-minute silence was observed in respect of the recent losses suffered by one of a visiting players and to match official Martyn Jarvis.

Home fans didn’t have to wait long for the game’s first goal as Connor Gamble volleyed home a cross from Alex Webb on six minutes.

Rugby controlled possession and were attacking with ease. Their lead was soon extended whem Shaw scored after Jay Finlay headed down captain Ryan Byrne’s corner.




It was soon 3-0 when Gerard Mcgahey was sent through one-on-one following a quickly took free kick by Arron Francis.

Borough looked like scoring with every attack and made it 4-0 after 20 minutes – Shaw slotting home from a Gamble pass.


Birstall’s attacks were limited to long range efforts, failing to test debutant keeper Neil Stacey in the Borough goal.

Borough made it five on the half hour mark when Francis lobbed the keeper from a Byrne header.

Webb squeezed a strike home from a tight angle on half time to make it 6-0.

Shaw completed his hat-trick on 56minutes to make it 7-0 before Darren Tank made three substitutes as Louis Askew, Kane Finney and Max Johnson came on.

Shaw scored two more goals late on – both assisted by the impressive Max Johnson, who looked very good on his debut from the bench.
