BOWLS: WARWICKSHRIE Bears’ final Midland Counties League fixture saw the visit of Northamptonshire.

A slow start meant that Warwickshire needed a second half fightback but they fell short losing 98-104 picking up six points.

Martin Hammond, Paul Finch, Chris Barton and Craig Carter made a good start to reach the halfway stage four shots up.

They won all but two of the remaining ends but only with singles, it was enough to see them to an 18-9 win.

Andy Manning, Neil Brereton, Steve Smith and Brian Boardman reached ten ends seven shots adrift, eventually winning 20-15.

By 18 ends Northants had taken the lead but Smith and co finished with a five and pair of singles to win 21-17.

Rob Maries, Don Darby, Rob Robinson and Neil Hancock found themselves fourteen shots down after nine ends but went on a six end spree to close the gap to four shots.

The remaining ends were level, Northants winning 19-14.

Andy Prickett, James Finch, Dave Fallon and Dan Box were also stuck in a tight battle, trailing by one midway through.

With three ends to play the deficit had increased to four shots, with the final losing margin five.

Box and co losing 15-20. Liam Pearcey, Lee Maughan, Malcolm Evans and Calvin Wells struggled to get started, 18-3 down after eleven ends.

Things picked up but Wells and co could only keep pace with their opponents, final score 10-24.
