Windfall to help Rugby woodland to flourish

A WINDFALL will help a woodland in Rugby to flourish.

The Friends of Diamond Jubilee Wood project will work with local residents to improve the woodland habitat, make more space for nature, and create a sustainable Friends group who can continue the work into the future.

The project has been launched thanks to a £52,000 donation from the Severn Trent Community Fund to Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s Dunsmore Living Landscape Partnership (DLL) scheme.

A programme of activities will provide opportunities to learn about practical conservation and wildlife, improve health and wellbeing and have fun within nature.

The project will also create a peaceful reflection area for people to use, including those who have attended funerals at the nearby Rainsbrook Crematorium.

Lucy Hawker, Dunsmore Living Landscape Scheme Manager, said: “Twelve years after it was planted by volunteers from the local community, this is the perfect time to be undertaking activities in the woodland which ensure the wildlife can continue to flourish.”

John Howes, Rugby Borough Council’s Green Space and Biodiversity Manager, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to involve members of the public, charities, schools and community groups. It also allows us to focus on increasing wellbeing and encouraging physical activity and connection with nature, which have untold benefits for the people of Rugby.”
