LABOUR’S candidate at the next general election has assumed the leadership of the local party.

Borough councillor Claire Edwards has taken over from Coun James Shera MBE who has held the post for eight years.

He said now was the time to hand over the reins to the next generation.

Party chairman Alan Webb said he had selflessly served the party and the people he represented over 30 years while Coun Edwards described him as an inspiration.

“James has been a mentor to me during my years on Rugby Borough Council,” she added.

“He has always inspired me to do the best I can and in taking over the reins of group leader I want to build on his legacy. These are challenging times in local government and I want to fight for the best possible future for the people of Rugby.”
