A MAKEOVER for Rugby town centre is on the cards after councillors approved new design standards for shop fronts.
New shop fronts will need to adhere to the rules set out in the Shopfronts Design Guide Supplementary Planning Document, which has been approved by Rugby Borough Council (RBC).
The document provides design guidance for shopfronts in Rugby, especially in the town centre.
It also establishes design principles for both historical and contemporary shopfronts, to make sure they ‘contribute to, rather than detract from’ the character of Rugby.
Existing shopfronts will not have to be changed, but the new policy will support improved designs where owners want to make changes that need planning permission.
The guide also provides a framework for planning officers when making decisions or recommendations to the planning committee.
A council spokesperson said: “Shop fronts form an important part in how residents and visitors perceive a place, forming a large part of the street scene at ground level.
“Shopfronts in Rugby currently make both positive and negative contributions, and the new document will ensure that all new development enhances its setting and the town centre overall.”
Coun Louise Robinson, RBC’s spokesperson for growth, investment, digital and communications, said: “Regenerating Rugby town centre is a key priority for RBC, and adopting this new design guide will play a significant part in making the town centre a more attractive and welcoming place.
“Policy changes such as this will give businesses confidence to submit high quality planning applications that will improve the built environment and support a more positive perception of the town centre.
“We are committed to working with businesses, and with other stakeholders, to make lasting and high quality improvements that reflect how much we love Rugby.”
Coun Isabelle McKenzie, RBC Liberal Democrat Group spokesperson for growth, investment, digital and communications, added: “The street scene plays an important part of the look and feel of a town centre.
“This policy will help improve the Georgian and Victorian elements of the town centre. We are also pleased that there are grants to help fund improvement works.”
