SPORT and play sessions for youngsters are ready to kick off the school holidays.
Rugby Borough Council’s (RBC) Summer Sport 2021 programme offers the chance to try a new sport or hone skills under the guidance of an expert coach, while free outdoor play sessions take place in the borough’s parks every week during the school break.
The council’s sports and recreation team also hosts a major free event at Whitehall Recreation Ground to celebrate National Play Day on Wednesday August 4, and offers youngsters the chance to learn bushcraft during Forest School sessions at Cock Robin Wood.
Summer Sport 2021 runs until Friday August 27, with table tennis sessions taking place at Hill Street Community Centre and a course at Draycote Water introducing youngsters to sailing.
A Professional Golf Association (PGA) coach leads a three-day course at the Leam Valley Golf Centre, while a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) coach holds court at Harris Academy Sports Centre for a tennis training camp.
And the programme offers an equine experience during a horse riding school at Grandborough’s Woodbine Stables, where youngsters can learn riding skills and stable management.
The Play Rangers team holds free play sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the six-week school break, visiting borough parks with a variety of themed sessions, including an Olympic celebration.
The sessions take place at Caldecott Park, Hillmorton’s GEC Recreation Ground, Centenary Park in Newbold, Long Lawford’s King George V Field, Cawston Grange Park and Brownsover’s Hollowell Way open space.
RBC leisure and wellbeing spokesman Coun Howard Roberts said: “We’re all looking forward to spending more time outdoors this summer, and the school holidays give youngsters a welcome chance to get outside and get active.
“From expert coaching to free, structured play sessions, the council’s Summer Sport programme offers plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and have fun with friends outside, all in a Covid-secure setting.”
Costs apply to all sport and Forest School sessions, which have been risk-assessed to provide a Covid-secure environment.
