Rugby students embrace the Christmas spirit

THE CHRISTMAS spirit was embraced by students and staff at The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College, who have shown their charitable nature with a series of festive events.

In early December the school sent dozens of shoes boxes packed with treats and goodies to disadvantaged children as part of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.

Teachers and school staff have warmed up their vocal chords and re-created their very own cover version of Shakin’ Steven’s Merry Christmas Everyone, which was shown to students in the end of term Christmas assembly, and also featured student performances and a staff pantomime.

Students with a talent for the performing arts joined forces with youngsters from Brownsover Community Infant School for the performance of AVS Winterval, which featured plenty of festive tunes and was enjoyed by parents and staff alike. Money from ticket sales was donated to The Children’s Society.

Instead of sending Christmas cards this year, staff at the school have raised almost £300 for local charity Hope 4 Rugby, which supports homeless and badly housed people in the town.

During the last week of term many students were presented with gold book awards recognising their hard work and effort, and students from the four Houses enjoyed Christmas dinner prepared by the school’s catering team.

On the final day of term staff wore their finest festive woollies as they took part in Christmas Jumper Day.

Avon Valley head teacher Alison Davies gets into the festive spirit with pupils.

Head teacher Alison Davies said: “Christmas is a special time of year and it is wonderful to see our students enjoying and taking part in the different events.

“Our students, and staff, have worked hard throughout the autumn term and it is nice to finish on a high. I wish our students, staff, parents and everyone connected with our school a merry Christmas.”
