Rugby hospital staff praised after inspection

ST CROSS Hospital has been rated ‘good’ – the second highest possible score – in a review by the national health regulator.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave the hospital an overall mark of ‘good’ for the care it gives its patients – singling out the care, safety and effectiveness of its services – after an inspection in March.

Inspectors said patients were treated with dignity and respect and were provided with appropriate emotional support.

Staff were described as dedicated, caring and proud to work there.

Areas for improvement included the amount of agency staff being used and the amount of patients being cared for on less appropriate wards, known as ‘outliers’.

The Chief Executive of the Trust which runs the hospital said they were thrilled at the inspection’s findings.

Andy Hardy of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire added that steps were already being taken to tackle the problem areas.

He said: “These were issues we had already identified to the CQC beforehand which is why in the five months since the inspection we have already put in place actions to tackle them.

“We have held a ‘perfect week’ exercise to improve how quickly we got patients to the right place, we reduced the amount of outliers by 90% and we now have a lead nurse for recruitment which has resulted in all our healthcare assistant vacancies being filled.

“We are now looking forward to working together with our partners to further address these areas quickly to further improve the care and experience for our patients.”

CQC inspections rate hospital services on five criteria: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, rating each as either outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate – with an overall rating also given.

Overall, the Trust was rated as ‘requires improvement’, along with approximately 60% of Trusts nationwide.
