Rugby Eco Hub volunteers celebrate first year

VOLUNTEERS at Rugby Eco Hub have celebrated their first year of helping to realise a greener Rugby.

The hub marked its first birthday in the heart of the town with a firm commitment to enhancing community sustainability.

The Clifton Road hub – which lives by the slogan ‘reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, regenerate’ – invited Rugby MP John Slinger to the event to see its flourishing community projects.

He saw how the hub’s kitchen cooks with an environmental conscience, joined volunteers from the hub’s Repair Cafe, and chatted with visitors being shown how to fix their broken items – even helping to repair an electric planer.

He said: “The Rugby EcoHub is such a great initiative, and shows the community spirit in our town in action.

“It’s people with a shared passion for the environment who have decided to do something about it by bringing the community together and offering them something tangible and useful – as well as a cafe well-stocked with delicious home made cakes.

“It was also great to meet the Repair Cafe people in the EcoHub. They’re showing an alternative approach to our modern modus operandi of buying products that are often not very well made, and then dumping them rather than repairing them, which is bad for the environment and ultimately wasteful.

“The volunteers bring their technical and engineering skill to the table and show that repairing things is often better than chucking them away.

“Thank you to the EcoHub and Repair Cafe for all you do, and for inviting me.”

The Eco Hub is hosting a ‘First Year Fiesta’ on Saturday (November 29), featuring a review of projects and achievements, a vegan or vegetarian lunch, fund-raising auctions, and a ‘Rugby Village’ fair including live music. Visit https://tinyurl.com/3ewasse5 for tickets.
