THOUSANDS of poppies are on display in two churches to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
The Poppy Festival is open to the public at St Botolph’s in Newbold and St John’s in Long Lawford this weekend.
Over the last 18 months, residents, churchgoers, schools and youth groups in the two villages have been making the poppies from various materials such as wool, paper, flowers and felt.
The inside of both churches are filled with displays of the hand crafted poppies, photographs from the period, and historical research into the lives of the soldiers named on the war memorial in St Botolph’s churchyard.
The festival is open at both churches from 2-5pm on Saturday (November 10) and Sunday (November 11). Refreshments will be available.
An Evening of Remembrance Concert is also being held on Friday (November 9) at 7.30pm in St Botolph’s, featuring a sing-a-long, poems, a short organ recital and readings. Light refreshments will be available. Tickets cost £6 and will be available on the door or from The Vicarage.
All funds raised will be divided between The Royal British Legion and the two churches.
