Police warn drivers in Rugby after spate of roadside scams

Rugby Editorial 15th Feb, 2016 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

DRIVERS in Rugby are warned to be cautious of being flagged down by pedestrians after a series of roadside scams.

Officers are urging motorists in the Rugby and Dunchurch areas to be wary if they are asked to pull over by the driver of a vehicle who says they are low on fuel.

A number of similar incidents have been reported over the past six months, centred around the M45, the A5 and the surrounding areas. Police believe this is part of a nationwide scheme with a number of perpetrators involved.

The group typically flag down passing motorists, tell them a hard-luck story and explain their car is out of petrol in order to take cash from their victims.

In order to gain the victim’s trust, the group hand over gold rings – believed to be fake – as a means of security until they can pay the victim back. The victims are also given fake contact details.

Investigating officer constable Hazel Busch said: “If motorists do come across such scams they should contact the police immediately, and also try to obtain the registration number of the vehicle the offenders are using.

“This group are preying on the good nature of the public, and while I do not want discourage anyone for helping someone in need, please be vigilant”

Anybody with more information on this type of incident is asked to call the police on 101 quoting incident number 286 of Friday 13 November 2015.

Alternatively, if you do not feel comfortable speaking directly to the police, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online via their website.
