Police officer who 'unfairly discriminated' against colleague is found guilty of misconduct

A POLICE officer who ‘unfairly discriminated’ against a colleague has been given a written warning.

Constable Thomas Barnard of Northamptonshire Police was found guilty of misconduct at a hearing at the force’s HQ.

The colleague, whose identity has not been made public, said PC Barnard made several references to her Muslim religion which she had considered to be racist.

They include an occasion when PC Barnard suggested that the proceeds of a purchase she had made from a Palestine aid charity would fund the Hamas terrorist organisation – a comment which she said left her ‘fuming’.

At the hearing, it was alleged PC Barnard breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour by failing to treat his colleague with respect and courtesy, and unfairly discriminating against his colleague – potentially undermining confidence in the Police Service.

PC Barnard was present at the hearing and admitted elements of the allegations.

The panel considered the available evidence and found the matter proved as misconduct.

The panel determined that the most suitable outcome was a written warning.
