A RUGBY man has been jailed for more than three years after admitting robbery and assaulting a police officer.

In the early hours of April 23, Gary Crane, 48, went into a shop on Clifton Road where he pushed the shopkeeper over and stole some alcohol before fleeing.

Police were called, and found Crane in a nearby street.

As they tried to arrest him, Crane headbutted one of the officers who was thankfully uninjured.

After CCTV showed Crane assaulting the shopkeeper, he was charged with robbery and assaulting a constable in the execution of his or her duty.

Having already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, Crane appeared at Warwick Crown Court where he was sentenced to three years and two months in jail.

Crane was also made to pay a victim surcharge fee.
