Kind pupils donate savings from their own money-boxes to help Ukrainians

KIND-HEARTED kids at a Rugby primary school have donated savings from their own money-boxes to help the people of Ukraine.

Children and staff at Bilton Church of England Junior School have been raising funds and awareness today (Monday March 7) to support the Red Cross Ukraine appeal.

They held a non-uniform day, with many choosing to wear the yellow and blue of Ukraine – described as ‘a ray of sunshine around the school’.

The children also took part in an assembly which gave them an insight into the situation in the Ukraine, and they were able to discuss their thoughts and feelings with their class teachers afterwards.

Pupil Sophia said: “I’ve got family in Ukraine. Innocent people are suffering. The children can’t go to school and people have lost their jobs.

“It is not their fault and collecting money for the British Red Cross is the best way to get help to where it is needed.”

Classmate Isla said: “I really want to help people in Ukraine, so I donated £10 from my money-box.”

And Mario also donated £5 from his savings, adding: “I know that people from the Ukraine are leaving their country and they need food and shelter and other essentials.”

Acting Headteacher Kate Webb decided to hold the fund-raising and awareness day after speaking with Ukrainian members of the school community.

She said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the idea. We are so proud of our children and their awareness of the world around them.

“The children, parents and carers have been incredible and we are so proud to have raised over £1,200, which we will be sending to the Red Cross Ukraine fund as soon as possible.”

The British Red Cross is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which has has set up an appeal to provide aid to those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Visit to donate.
