Keeping active over the festive season

THE festive season is filled with joy, celebration… and long stretches of cosy downtime.

With social events, rich food and shorter days, it’s easy for movement to slip to the bottom of the priority list.

But staying active in December doesn’t have to mean skipping mince pies or spending hours in the gym. With a little creativity, you can keep your body moving and enjoy all the magic of the season.

Make movement part of the festivities

The easiest way to stay active is to blend it into your celebrations, take a post-lunch family walk on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, do a winter lights walking route around your neighbourhood or try out winter sports like ice skating, or a stroll round a Christmas market.

When movement is the event, you’ll hardly notice you’re exercising.

Dress for the weather

Cold weather is one of the biggest barriers to winter exercise. The best way to stay warm is to layer up, with a thermal top, light fleece, waterproof jacket and of course not forgetting tick socks and gloves.

If you’re warm and comfortable, you’re far more likely to head outside — even if it’s just for a brisk 15-minute walk.

Keep it short and simple

Forget hour-long workouts, December is about efficiency.

Try a 10–15 minute home workouts, a quick yoga stretch when you wake up, two brisk 10-minute walks and a five-minute mobility break between wrapping presents

Short bursts keep your energy up and help counter long periods of sitting.

Make the most of mornings

Festive evenings fill up fast – dinners, drinks, carol concerts, parties – so mornings are your best bet for consistent movement.

Even a short morning session can boost your mood, keep you energised for the day and educe the temptation to skip exercise later

Think a walk with a coffee, gentle stretching, or a quick home routine before the celebrations begin.

Try fun, festive themed workouts

Add a bit of novelty to keep motivation high including 12 Days of Christmas circuits, a festive playlist dance workout a Santa-run or charity fun run.

A sprinkle of silliness goes a long way in December.

Prioritise wellbeing, not perfection

December is not the month for strict fitness rules or guilt.

Instead set a low-pressure goal foe example move every day, walk 20 minutes or stretch before bed

Be flexible,  if plans change, swap a long workout for a short one.

The key is gentle consistency, not rigidity.

Don’t Forget to Rest

Staying active is important, but so is rest. December is emotionally and physically busy.

Prioritise good sleep, hydration and relaxation with spending time away from screens and with family and friends.

The goal is to start the new year feeling energised, not exhausted.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need a tough regime to stay active during the festive period – just small, joyful habits woven naturally into your days. Movement should feel like a welcome break from the busyness, not another item on the to-do list.

But staying active in December doesn’t have to mean skipping mince pies or spending hours in the gym. With a little creativity, you can keep your body moving and enjoy all the magic of the season.
