Horse riders to help fight rural crime

HORSE riders in Warwickshire are being urged to play their part in the fight against rural crime.

Police chiefs are looking to recruit riders to help crack down on everything from fly-tipping to deer poaching.

The Mounted Volunteer programme – a joint initiative between Warwickshire Police, the British Horse Society, Warwickshire Horse Watch and Warwickshire College’s Morton Morrell agricultural centre – is looking to sign up volunteers aged over 17, who own their own horse and have insurance for it, and who can commit to volunteer for 16 hours per month for a minimum of 12 months.

A police spokesman said: “The role is voluntary and successful candidates will have no greater power of arrest than any other citizen. Mounted volunteers will not be expected to take on the same responsibilities as special constables or mounted police.

“Their role will be to observe and look out for anything suspicious or which warrants police action and report back to the police control room. They will become part of their local Safer Neighbourhood Teams and assist the police in a variety of differing functions.

“They will perform their duties whilst routinely taking their horses out and become the eyes and ears of the local community, providing intelligence/information to support crime prevention in rural communities.”

Successful candidates will be issued with a high visibility jacket and their horses with reflective sheets and leg wraps.
