Flipping fun to return to Rugby town centre

FLIPPING fun for Pancake Day will return to Rugby town centre next month to raise money for a life-saving local charity.

Rugby Rokeby Lions and Rugby First are inviting families, individuals and businesses to take part in traditional pancake races and help raise funds for the OurJay Foundation.

Races and activities will take place in High Street and Sheep Street on Saturday March 1, between 12 noon and 3pm.

On the menu will be pancake races, pancake tossing and throwing, face painting, mini rides, a pancake quiz trail, and a chance to meet The Rokeby Lion – the mascot of the Rugby Rokeby Lions fund-raising group which is co-organising the event.

All money raised will go to The OurJay Foundation, a charity founded by Rugby woman Naomi Rees-Issitt following her son Jamie’s death from a cardiac arrest when he was just 18.

The charity raises awareness of the importance of publicly accessible defibrillators and provides training in life-saving skills – and has so far installed over 220 defibrillators across Warwickshire and beyond.

Rugby Rokeby Lions President Gill Nelson said: “It would be great to see as many people as possible take part in the races or come along and cheer people on.

“Not only will the races be fun, but they are also a great way of raising funds and awareness around the OurJay Foundation.”

Linda Lowne, Rugby First Business Director, added: “All monies raised will go to the OurJay Foundation for the purchase of a defibrillator to be located in Rugby town centre.”

Naomi Rees-Issitt said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Rugby Rokeby Lions and Rugby First for organising the event and fund raising for the OurJay Foundation. We continue to work towards heart safety across communities in memory of our precious Jamie.”

Anyone can take part in the races by registering in advance or signing up on the day. Frying pans and pancakes are provided. Fancy dress is welcome. All participants receive certificates, and prizes are awarded to winners.
