A FIREFIGHTER based in Rugby has hung up his hose after nearly four decades of service to Warwickshire.

Steve Sweet, a Service Crew Manager for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue, has retired after 39 years in the service.

Steve, affectionately nicknamed ‘Sugar’ by his colleagues, initially joined Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service as an on-call firefighter stationed at Atherstone Fire Station. He worked alongside his on-call firefighting as a miner and then as a delivery driver.

He moved from on-call firefighting to a full-time role, serving at Nuneaton Fire Station before transferring to Rugby.

Steve, who has dedicated the past four decades of his life to protecting Warwickshire residents, enjoys spending time outdoors when not at work – and even once saved a man from drowning while he was out walking his dogs.

A spokesperson for Rugby Fire Station said: “Steve’s presence around the station will be missed by all. After nearly 40 years of service to Warwickshire he is hanging up his tunic one last time.

“Steve is always keen to pass on his knowledge and experience – along with the odd ‘enlightening’ story from years ago! He was always especially keen to help new recruits find their feet and grow to become competent members of the watch.

“Sugar, you really are one in a million and the station is definitely quieter without you. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, but remember not to be a stranger, the kettle will always be on.”

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Barnaby Briggs, said: “Steve was a strong, dependable firefighter and a steady presence at operational incidents.

“I know he will be missed by everyone here at Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, Rugby Fire Station and everyone that has worked alongside him across the last 39 years.”

Coun Andy Crump, Warwickshire County Council’s spokesman for Fire and Rescue, said: “I am very grateful for Steve’s service to the county and its residents. I hope he will be able to enjoy his retirement to the utmost and will look back on his firefighting years with pride.”
