DARTS players will step up to the oche to raise money for vital life-saving equipment in memory of a Rugby schoolboy who died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) 13 years ago.
Lawrence Sheriff pupil Joe Spooner died in 2005 at the age of 15 while relaxing after a cricket match.
Since then, his parents Tracey and Stephen have raised tens of thousands of pounds with the help of cardiac charity SADS UK, helping to donate defibrillators
to schools, sports clubs and community venues.
On Sunday February 18, they will host the 12th annual Joe Spooner Darts Tournament at the Workers Club in Oliver Street. There will be a men’s and women’s darts competition, with the winner of each playing for the overall title.
Trophies supplied by long standing tournament sponsor Bradley Electrical will be up for grabs, while a raffle will offer prizes including a two-night Blackpool break for two people, and a caravan weekend in Skegness for up to eight people and sports memorabilia will be up for auction.
Tracey said: “Joe was 15 when we lost him to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 2005. This tournament keeps his memory alive and raises money for his account with SADS UK, a wonderful charity that does incredible work not only with the bereaved but with those living with life threatening heart conditions too.
“They also raise awareness of these conditions, pay for life saving equipment – Joe’s account has donated 30 so far – and much more.”
Entry costs £4 (free for spectators). Contact Tracey at [email protected] or on 07976 469862 to enter, or to offer items for the raffle or auction.
