Donation helps rugby players keep training during lockdown

Rugby Editorial 2nd Mar, 2021   0

PLAYERS at a rugby club can continue training during lockdown, thanks to a donation from a developer.

St Andrew’s Rugby Football Club has received £250 from David Wilson Homes, to support its Covid-19 compliant operations.

The donation has been made to support the Ashlawn Road club amid financial and social challenges brought on by the pandemic.

St Andrews chairman James Marston said: “We were delighted to hear we were receiving much needed support during these difficult times. David Wilson Homes has helped to provide vital equipment, ensuring safety of our players and members allowing them to continue to enjoy the great game of rugby.

“We have had to increase the pitches we use and provide the necessary safe guards such as hand wash stations, signage and sanitising stations for kit and training equipment.

“Sadly, St Andrews RFC had to close the clubhouse during lockdown but the club has managed to stay above water over the summer. We have adults and children of all ages attending from the local community, all of whom through rugby have stayed physically and mentally fit by training hard, working in teams and socialising with all members of the club and community.”

Now in its 91st year, St Andrews RFC has over 275 players across 14 teams.

The influence of grassroots sports on positive health and wellbeing has been of great significance this year in particular, and local clubs have relied on support from their communities.

David Wilson Homes, which has two developments neighbouring the club, made the donation from its Community Fund.

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “It was a privilege to support St Andrews RFC in its efforts to ensure its members can continue to enjoy rugby safely in accordance with the Covid-19 guidelines.

“While it’s always important for us to support the local community, it’s especially vital at present, and the club’s goal to promote positive health and wellbeing through sport is much needed in the current climate.”
