Council-owned former allotment site in Lutterworth sold for housing

A COUNCIL-owned former allotment site in Lutterworth has been sold for housing.

The site at De Verdon Road, which has been earmarked for more than 70 new homes, was sold by Harborough District Council (HDC) for £4.9million.

The council agreed not to pursue the proposed housing project itself amid a rethink of its priorities in the wake of the pandemic.

Councillors agreed to sell the land on the open market after planning consent for the housing development was granted.

HDC said capital raised from the sale would be invested into future projects in the district.

The council’s Deputy Leader and strategic asset management spokesman Coun James Hallam said: “With the significant impact of the pandemic, a decision was taken to sell this land on behalf of the taxpayer.

“We will carefully evaluate how we can utilise this capital receipt to benefit the Harborough district, including the Lutterworth locality.”

Estate agency Fisher German was instructed to sell the land on behalf of HDC.
