Children's charity bids fond farewell to worker after 25 years of service

A FOND farewell has been given to a charity worker after 25 years of supporting families with very young children in the Lutterworth area.

Erika Lucas played an instrumental role in Home-Start South Leicestershire’s running and development since she joined in 1999.

It was during Erika’s first year that the charity moved to its current premises in Coventry Road, purchased with a grant from the National Lottery.

She has seen many changes in the charity during her time including premises extensions, changes in technology, and changes in staff and volunteers.

Erika said: “Despite the many changes needed by a small charity to keep up with the times, I’m glad to say that the fundamental ethos of Home-Start South Leicestershire – of one parent supporting another – has remained at the core of this wonderful charity.”

Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the charity now supports 154 families each year – up from its relatively humble beginnings in 1984 when it helped 38 families.

Over the years, the charity has supported a total of over 4,000 families and nearly 8,000 children across the Harborough District.

Help is provided by a small staff team and a larger team of trained, vetted and supported volunteers who help in family groups, parent courses, and by visiting families in their homes for emotional and practical support.

The charity would like to hear from families who have been supported over the 40 years. Members of the community are invited to attend its celebratory AGM on Tuesday (October 15) from 1pm at 121 Coventry Rd, Market Harborough. Email [email protected] to RSVP.
