CARE workers and relatives of residents at a Rugby care home were given a disorientating insight into what it feels like to live with dementia.
Anya Court Care Home invited 25 people to take part in the Virtual Dementia Tour, provided by training2care.
Attendees were taken on a journey through an interactive bus and their senses altered to create feelings of confusion, vulnerability, intimidation and fear – to give them a better understanding of dementia.
The Virtual Dementia Tour – created 21 years ago in America by world renowned professional PK Beville – is medically and scientifically proven to be the closest a person with a healthy brain can get to experiencing what dementia might feel like.
Caroline Simmons, whose mother lives at the care home, said: “This has given me an insight into the path my mum is now on and helps me understand the journey she is going through.”
Anya Court customer relationship manager Karen Handley said: “I had the opportunity to attend this last year and it really opened my eyes to how dementia affects the person in ways I had never previously thought.
“We decided to open our session to the families of residents as well as team members and our volunteers. The feedback from everyone who attended has been really positive.”
