Canal enthusiasts replace ageing tourist information board at Hillmorton Locks

Rugby Editorial 8th Aug, 2021   0

VOLUNTEER canal enthusiasts have replaced an ageing 20-year-old tourist information board at Hillmorton Locks on the Oxford canal.

Members of Hillmorton canal heritage group Old Mortonians researched local canal history, wrote the text and drew the location map for the new board – the second created and installed by the group at the locks.

Working with Rugby Borough Council (RBC) which produced the design, Mortonians raised the money for Braunston-based Signzone Graphics to produce and install the board.

Old Mortonian members were joined by RBC’s Coun Kathryn Lawrence and Place Marketing Officer Abi McCartney for the unveiling ceremony.

The next project for the Mortonians is in September 2022 to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of canal engineer James Brindley, who died as his last ever canal reached Morton Pound, just below Hillmorton Locks.
